SERIAL RENTER SPOTLIGHT: THE ARCHIVE, 666 GREENWICH STREET
Jun. 4, 2012 - Brick Underground
It’s time for another Serial Renter spotlight, and this time I’d like to highlight a building that’s been near and dear to my heart ever since I moved to this island nearly a decade ago.
Over the years, I’ve discussed this building at length with friends, and recently it came up again after speaking with a couple of friends who moved in around the same time as each other, and had nothing but amazing things to say.
Here are a few reasons why you might want add The Archive to your must-see list:
1. Location
The Archive rests conveniently between the charming café-and-shop-abundant West Village (one of the most coveted downtown neighborhoods) and the park and jogging-path-lined Hudson River. The PATH train is right across the street and access to the 1, 2 trains is just a few short blocks away, but it’s a little further (just over ½ mile) to reach the West 4th transit hub housing the A, B, C, D, E, F, M trains.
While the building is quite large (it has more than 400 units and runs a full city block) compared to the quaint townhouses and walk-ups that dominate the area, one of the things I’ve always loved about the Archive is its ability to add charm and a distinct-but-not-distracting architectural style to the neighborhood.
3. Building service and management
Rockrose, which manages The Archive, operates a handful of well-appointed buildings, and its bread and butter consists of luxury buildings in the downtown area. Based in part on the great things I’ve heard from renters about the friendly doormen and the efficiency of the rest of the staff, the Archive is one of the crown jewels in the Rockrose portfolio. It doesn’t hurt that management has a presence within the building via an on-site leasing office open 6 days a week.
4. Amenities.
Tenants of the Archive have doormen/concierge services, a parking garage, and a landscaped roof deck with one of the finer city and river views I’ve seen. Although it doesn’t offer some of the over-the-top features like complimentary breakfast or a swimming pool like some of the new developments to the south, it has all of the most common amenities one would expect in a luxury rental. The building also features a gym, on-site grocery store, and dry cleaner within the retail spaces on the first floor of the building.
5. Layouts & interiors
If you’re looking for a loft feel without sacrificing the luxury services of a high-rise, then the Archive might be just the place for you. A landmark, the building used to be the U.S. Appraiser’s Warehouse before it was converted to an apartment building in the late 1980’s. As a result, the interiors are long on charm, character, and benefits like super high ceilings that make the spaces seem bigger along with generous arched windows that not only look great, but also bring in a lot of natural light.
6. Price
Given the building’s location, amenities, interiors, and rich history, it’s not surprising that the Archive commands the prices that it does. A quick check on StreetEasy shows a few studios and 1-bedrooms advertised as available in the building.
