EXCAVATION PROGRESSING QUICKLY FOR PELLI CLARKE PELLI’S 555 WEST 38TH STREET IN HUDSON YARDS

Oct. 20, 2019 - YIMBY

Excavation has progressed significantly at 555 West 38th Street since YIMBY last checked in on the Hudson Yards site in late August. Construction workers have ripped up all of the asphalt from the parking lot that formerly occupied the property and have unearthed a substantial amount of dirt. The plot will eventually give rise to a 52-story residential skyscraper designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects and developed by Rockrose. Located directly across Eleventh Avenue from the Jacob K. Javits Center, the 570-foot-tall tower will contain 598 rental units. SLCE is the architect of record.

New photos show the array of excavators and machinery making their way below street level, while skyscraper projects like The Spiral and 50 Hudson Yards can be seen beginning their vertical ascents in the background.

The site is directly to the north of 450 Eleventh Avenue, a high-rise hotel project from DSM Design Group. With their location adjacent to the Hudson River, both towers will be prominently visible from New Jersey. These structures will join larger skyscraper projects such as 50 Hudson Yards, 66 Hudson Boulevard, aka The Spiral, 3 Hudson Boulevard, and eventually the second phase of Hudson Yards.

No construction timeframe for Pelli’s design has been announced, but given the pace of progress of the excavation, foundations should commence very soon. The superstructure should most likely start to rise in the first half of 2020. The closest subway station is the 7 train, a six-minute walk to the south between 50 Hudson Yards and 55 Hudson Yards.

Completion of 555 West 38th Street is posted for fall 2022.
